Description: Light brown wide-mouthed cylindrical stoneware jar, four-gallon capacity, with crescent-shaped lug handles and a flattened roll rim. No lid or slip decoration.  Marked "BALLARD BROTHERS / BURLINGTON, VT / 4" in upper center of one side, below rim.

Notes: According to company invoices in the Ballard Pottery Company Collection at the University of Vermont Special Collections, this type of jar was sold by Ballard as a lidded "butter jar" and it was produced in 1/2 to 8 gallon sizes. This jar presumably was sold with an accompanying lid, no longer present.
