Notes
Burlington's Volunteer Hose Company was one of many private organizations that assisted in fire fighting efforts in the early years of the municipality. In 1873, they held a fundraising "levee" (perhaps a reception or dance) at the Van Ness House, the largest and most prominent hotel in town.
