Notes
New York vocal instructor J. Edmund Skiff (1873-1953) offered a "Singing School" in Burlington in the summer of 1911. Over the course of 10 weeks, he taught 15 pupils. Skiff presented a series of recitals between July and September 1911 to showcase his students' work. They performed operatic pieces, popular songs, traditional ballads, and hymns. A review of Skiff's closing recital in September 1911 noted: "A review of the work of the past 10 weeks shows most encouraging results, and gives great promise for the musical future of Burlington. Here were some 15 pupils of various ages and experience, some of whom have had their first vocal training this summer, who sang with quality of tone and excellence of interpretation worthy of singers of years of experience. Mr. Skiff has done a great work here this summer and the results will accrue for years to come. It is of a great advantage to have outsiders of ability come into the city for a few weeks, as it awakens a broader interest in culture and reaches many who might otherwise permit their talents to lie dormant. ... - "Closing Recital of the J. Edmund Skiff Summer School of Singing," The Burlington Daily News, September 7, 1911.
