In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, downtown Burlington, Vermont contained several large hotels, including the Van Ness House, the Hotel Vermont, and the New Sherwood. These multi-story structures, which contained elegant marble lobbies and roof gardens with panoramic views of Lake Champlain, were among the most prominent buildings in the city.
